Special Education Department

In serving students with disabilities, Woodbridge has been developing targeted Learning Strategies classes that support student learning in the general content. Students are placed in Learning Strategies classes to support Algebra I, Geometry, and AFDA. The special education teachers are assigned to the general class in these content areas and are also assigned to the matching Learning Strategies classes. Students have the opportunity to remediate the concepts being taught in the general class, to make up assessments, and to work on their IEP goals. The special education teachers provide a variety of instructional strategies to enhance the curriculum and they are providing instruction using a computer based program - Math IXL - in which students can work on specific Standards of Learning, both at their grade level and at their level of functioning.

Woodbridge has also targeted students with deficits in reading and writing who participate in Learning Strategies geared to these deficits and students are placed by grade level (Grades 9/10; Grades 11/12). As in the math Learning Strategies, the special education teachers work with the general education teachers to provide support in the English classes. Additionally, WSHS special education teachers use Achieve 3000, a computer based reading program, to support reading comprehension and writing. Teachers participate in training sessions two times per year in which they have the opportunity to meet one on one with an Achieve 3000 trainer to receive individualized support. WSHS is working diligently to close the gap between students with disabilities and general education students in reading, writing, and math. Special education teachers are provided increased time to collaborate with their general education colleagues and to work towards developing a true co-teaching model.
