WSHS offers the following courses in Dance:

Dance I

Fundamentals of Dance offers students an introduction to dance techniques and styles; dance history and cultural context; analysis, evaluation, and critique; and aesthetics. Students will develop the technical and artistic skills necessary for expressive dance performance and for the safe training and care of the body as an instrument. They will demonstrate an understanding of dance within the contexts of history, culture, and other art forms, and of the role of dance as a vehicle for human expression. Students will develop observation and critical-thinking skills for the evaluation of dance works, including their impact on society, and nurture a lifelong appreciation for dance as an integral component of an educated, cultured society.

Dance II

Prerequisite:

  • Must take Dance I and have permission from Mrs. Fegley to take this course.
  • Must have successfully mastered all dance technique from Dance I to safely take this course.

The Virginia Dance II Standards of Learning (revised in 2020) help students integrate and build upon the concepts learned and skills acquired in Dance I. Students develop additional performance and production skills while increasing their range of physical skills through disciplined study of dance technique. Dance improvisation and composition studies expand students' creativity and choreographic craftsmanship. Students develop communicative, interpretive, and evaluative skills by responding to and analyzing a variety of dance experiences. Through historical and cultural studies, students expand their understanding of the variety of ways that people can engage with and respond to dance works. Students explore and define the role of personal experiences in the development of artistic choices.

Dance III and IV

 Prerequisite:

  • These courses will continue the sequence of dance classes that begins with Dance I.
  • Only students given permission by Mrs. Fegley may take this class.
