Mission Statement

The WSHS English Department offers a wide array of required courses for graduation. We expose all students to selections of World literature, American Literature, and British literature

Our core curriculum includes the following strands of reading, writing, research, and oral communications.

  • Reading - We attempt to encourage reading for all students on or above grade level with a variety of texts from the classics to contemporary selections.
  • Writing - We strive to introduce all students to a variety of writing skills to enable them to communicate and converse through the written word in an ever-changing world where communicating is one of the keys to success.
  • Research - All grade levels complete research to broaden their perspective and teach them the value of opinions versus facts.
  • Oral Communication - All grade levels offer various forms of communication - from Socratic Seminars (students teaching students) to informal speeches - to prepare them for the 21st-century environment.
  • We have continually had success in meeting state goals for the Standards of Learning by improving our scores each year. We have recently added college-leveled seminar courses at the junior and senior levels. In addition, we offer a dual enrollment program for seniors to acquire college credit.
