On behalf of the gifted education resource department, I want to welcome you to the 2016-2017 school year. I, along with Mrs. Bristow and Mr. Eberly, look forward to working with you through the seminar program in the coming year. This letter is designed to briefly explain how the seminar scheduling process works and to let you know what to do and where to go should you have any questions.
Your gifted education services will be provided through a seminar program which are scheduled during your regularly scheduled classes. Freshmen and seniors will be meeting with Mrs. LaPlant in room 2218/2220, sophomores will be meeting with Mr. Eberly in room 1311, and juniors will be meeting with Mrs. Bristow in room 1808.
You will be given a calendar of scheduled meeting dates at the start of each semester. We will also send you a text through Remind the morning of each scheduled seminar. You must have either the calendar or the remind text in your hand as your pass to attend seminar. It is your responsibility to let your regularly scheduled teacher know you will not be in class on that date. You are responsible for your missed work.
On the day of your scheduled seminar, you will first go to your regularly scheduled teacher to check in so that you are not marked absent. You will then go to the seminar classroom and you will remain in that classroom for the duration of the class period. In the event that you are not comfortable leaving a particular class to come to seminar, you can come to your assigned gifted teacher in advance to request to change to another seminar group. Please do this as early as possible.
If you do not feel comfortable missing your regular classes at all, we will be attempting to hold alternative sessions through the flex classes this year. If you fall into this category, you will come to see Mrs. LaPlant in 2220 to sign up for the flex seminar group. Flex sessions are only 45 minutes, but students are not required to make up missed work due to the nature of the flex schedule. There will be one flex group scheduled per grade level, but this program will be expanded if there is demand for it.
I encourage you to follow these gifted pages on the school website, which will have the updated calendar and seminar schedules. This will be particularly important once we get into winter and start having snow days.
If you do not wish to participate in gifted services this year and would not like to receive passes for seminars, please see me in 2220 as soon as possible to fill out a not participating form. I would encourage you to leave your options open and attend through the flex program, but if you are sure that you have no interest in attending seminar, you will need to complete the requisite form.
You can expect to receive your first semester calendar by the end of the second week of school. Questions or concerns about the seminar scheduling process or the seminar program can be directed to Mrs. LaPlant. Please feel free to stop by 2220 or email me at email@example.com.
